BOAT 1 - HASTINGS - 20th OCTOBER 2019
This event was re-scheduled to Hastings, and then cancelled due to weather problems.
FRESHWATER 2 - THORNTON 6th OCTOBER
Event believed cancelled due to lack of starters
FRESHWATER 1 - ALEXANDRA - 22nd SEPTEMBER
Briefing as planned plus a good look at the river from the Alexandra Bridge saw the water running very high and rather dirty. Decision was made to move further upstream to Gilmours Bridge nearer to Thornton. It was decided that was a better spot to fish despite some members still setting up their gear at the original venue.
Ryan Dalziel in the meantime planned some casting practice with soft plastics just below the bridge and on his 2nd or 3rd cast produced a ripper of a Brown Trout that later weighed in at 2.175 Kgs. And as it was, that fish became the only catch of the day amongst all the members. Weather for the day was good, and the water progressively became clearer, but nobody told the fish that we were there. Martin and John tried fly fishing endeavours whilst the majority of members stuck with the soft plastics, but all to no avail. There appeared to be quite a few people angling for about 200-300 metres either side of the bridge but no further, so we were able to bypass the crowd and do our own thing. Ryan Dalziel with the only fish, had Heaviest Bag and Heaviest Fish with his early Brown Trout shown below. FFESTUARY 1 - POWLETT RIVER - 7th SEPTEMBER 2019
Members arriving at the briefing point were confronted with strong westerly winds and they continued for the whole day. A late starting time of 12 noon did not deter members most of whom wandered upstream from the Powlett River Bridge. Martin Fellows preferred going down to the entrance. Live crab bait was most successful for members although Martin did well on his preferred plastics. Pix of fish attached were estimated at 1.3 kilos, but were returned to the water as were many fish on the day being undersize or not required by the chefs at home. Weigh in time only three fish were presented with Michael Doody having 2 bream totalling 1210 grams for the heaviest bag of the day and Mark Dalziel having one bream of 760 grams for the days heaviest fish. A good days fishing with few kept and many returned to the water, but basically spoiled by the wind and the cold. Next time will be better. BEMM RIVER - QUEENS BIRTHDAY WEEKEND TRIP
Our members plus one guest settled in to the accommodation at Cosy Nook and prepared our fishing gear whilst looking forward to a great weekend intimated by the calm weather forecast.
Saturday morning saw the kayak brigade consisting of Mal Hunter, Michael Doody, Martin Fellows and John Van Vliet were in full swing and presented with a decent challenge launching their craft one at a time from a steep bank at Dollys Garden and the later retrieval was equally challenging. The day was overcast, perfect river fishing conditions and the soft plastic lures were almost producing one fish per cast mainly Estuary Perch. Martin Fellows got a few bream as well as the EPs. Most fish caught to be weighed were kept in a live tank and then released. The day's outing saw Martin Fellows top the bag weight with 4430 grams of 2 bream and 4 estuary perch and heaviest fish with a 955 gram Estuary Perch. John Van Vliet weighed 1 bream and 4 EPs for a total of 3510 grams whilst Michael Doody had 4 bream totalling 2795 grams. John and Michael shared the heaviest bream with 875 grams each. Roger Clarke was fishing the banks with Eddy Tusia and managed to weigh in 2 bream for 1265 grams. Sunday's weather still looked brighter but good, and it was Dollys Garden again. News must have travelled as many of the Saturday Lake boaties turned up to annoy our intrepid members. Some members went upstream and found fishing quieter with predominant Estuary Perch being caught and released also some decent tailor but these proved hard to get on board. On returning downstream we found the day much the same as Saturday although the boat traffic seemed to reduce the catch rate. Martin Fellows weighed in a bag of 3 bream and 2 Estuary Perch totalling 3254 grams while Michael Doody had one 900 gram bream for the days heaviest fish. A better reflection of the weekend was the number of fish caught and released, many more than those weighed in. A great two days of fishing in good conditions with good companions. SURF 4 - KILCUNDA CEMETERY BEACH - 2nd June 2019As we had too few Members to start, the outing was transferred to Gunnamatta where Eddy Tusia managed to bag out with ease.
SURF 3 - CAPE WOOLAMAI - Sunday 19th May 2019A small turn out of members under Ken Caldecott's captaincy but still managed 19 fish between them. A good day.
Freshwater 3 - Thornton - Saturday 11th May 2019

GBOATGGGGGBfFFFF |
The morning looked good on paper, but the westerley blow that showed up early in the day continued for the whole day making things a little unpleasant on the water together with a mainly overcast sky to add to the challenge.
Whiting preferance was the order of the day, with any other species only counting towards the heaviest fish award.
Long standing member Henry Wolowiec has not been tripping for a while but enjoyed a day out with Henry Tabone.
The Whiting Whisperers (Martin and John) found the conditions and the sky a little daunting and had to work hard for their results.
Good results showed up at the weigh in with everybody presenting whiting and looking forward to a meal of fresh produce. Martin Fellows topped the days outing with ten fish totalling 2850 grams and also the heaviest fish at 625 grams. Others weighed were Henry Tabone with 9 fish, John Van Vliet with 7 fish, David Taylor, Henry Wolowiec and Ken Caldecott with 6 fish each and Russell May with 2 fish and a 260 gram Rock Flathead, an heaviest award contestant being the first flathead weighed in this season.
In all, a good day for King George Whiting.

BOAT 4 -- HASTINGS
Sunday 27th January 2019 - Australia Day Long Weekend
Weather report looked good for the day, but then.............Captain for the day David Rosenfield was running late and we had to start without him. Then David Taylor had an issue with his boat engine operation and chose to leave his vessel on its trailer. Out on the water the wind created a chop that made for unpleasant fishing action.
The receding tide had members getting stuck into the King George whiting, with the Middle Spit being the most productive.
The usual whiting whisperers of John Van Vliet and Martin Fellows did well bagging out with most fish around 30-33 cms although John did get one 43.5 cm fish to weigh in later.
Henry Tabone did well with six KG whiting, whilst the Ken Caldecott boat went north and explored the Yaringa area but not with any great success.
Weigh in time saw John Van Vliet with a bag weight of 2365 grams including the days heaviest fish of 595 grams (the 43.5 cm item) Martin Fellows weighed in 2145 grams and Henry Tabone totalled 1315 grams.
A good days outing, and many thanks for Ken Caldecott allowing David Taylor to hitch a ride to fish.

BOAT 3 -- HASTINGS
Sunday 9th December 2018
This event was the rescheduled December 2nd day, and the looks of the weather this time was ideal. Light winds, mainly overcast skies, and generally just right for a good days fishing.
All the boats headed off in various directions from the end on the Hastings Channel with the exception of Ken Caldecott anchoring just outside the Channel with some hope of re-creating a humungus KG whiting as found on the Boat 2 outing. Interesting to note with some historical interest that Russell May's 675 gram KG whiting on Boat 2 was the first addition to the Club whiting records in ten years!!!
The whiting whisperers of John Van Vliet and Martin Fellows followed to the north end of Middle Spit, and shortly were followed by David Rosenfield and Michael Doody.
The whiting were productive straight off with the last of the run out tide on the edge of a drop off, but with the expected change of tide, the fishing dropped away and made for more hard work around the sand holes to get a result.
It was a good result for the day with most members weighing in fish. Michael Doody topped the day with a 495 gram KG whiting and whilst John Van Vliet and Martin Fellows both bagged out, it was a close finish at the scales with only 20 grams separating the bags and the better one was John Van Vliet with 2185 grams. Well done guys.

FLY FISHING LESSONS
llowing an excellent presentation by Gavin Hurley back at our 3rd October meeting, we had seven members attending a Hurleys Fly Fishing Workshop last Sunday 25th November.
Held at the Alpine Trout Farm at Noojee, all started with an instruction lesson of casting, but without the flies attached.......just casting. Having sorted out the finer points, members then moved to another pool to catch some serious fish. Everyone tried three different types of fly: a floating dry fly, a nymph with an indicator attached, and a Woolly Bugger that twitches back to you.
Everyone caught fish on each of the variant of flies with Michael Doody landing the biggest of the day. John Van Vliet, Pat and Ken Caldecott, Mal Hunter, Mark Constantine and Ken Mottau all agreed it to be a great and worthy experience covering the finer points of fly fishing.
Anyone wanting to participate in another day should contact either John Van Vliet or your Secretary.

BOAT 2 -- HASTINGS
Sunday 18th November
SNAPPER PREFERENCE OUTING
A great member turnout for the Snapper Preference with Captain of the Day David Rosenfield giving us a briefing and highlighting the forecast afternoon wind.
Everyone headed off either north or south from the Hastings Channel aiming for their favourite spot, with slight wind a fair bit of chop.
Initially wind and tide made things a little unpleasant, but the change of tide brought far nicer conditions.
John Van Vliet and Martin Fellows made merry of a variety of fish close by Elizabeth Island. Salmon, flathead, trevally, KG whiting and pinkie snapper amongst other assorted fish. Henry Tabone then snuck up behind the fish catching pair and did quite nicely.
At weigh-in time Geoff Long had one snapper of 645 grams, Martin Fellows had two small snapper totalling 1480 grams and a gummy shark of 1580 grams (eligibility for Shark Award)
But the day was won by Henry Tabone with two snapper weighing 4815 grams and the heaviest fish being a very nice 4265 grams.
Other surprise of the day was Russell May with a 675 gram King George whiting, a Master fish and Russell's first Master Award. Well done Russell.

MELBOURNE CUP WEEKEND
3rd - 6th November 2018
Our much awaited trip to Lake Fyans was a first for the Club travelling to Victoria's Western District.
Friday's gale force winds had died down considerably by Saturday, but the boaties chose to stay on dry land and let the kayakers hit the water. John Van Vliet was successful in catching the weekends ONLY lure caught fish, a 755 gram Rainbow Trout. Michael Doody weighed in 2 Rainbows totalling 1130 grams and David Rosenfield had a Rainbow of 650 grams. Not the best day for lures. The night was enjoyed by all dining at the Bistro and telling fishy stories.
Sunday saw an improvement in the catch rates and despite Martin and John trying hard with lures, mudeyes were the flavour of the day.
Mal Hunter landed a 58 cm Brown Trout weighing 2075 grams, heaviest fish for the day, Mal's second Master Trout Award, and subsequently this was also heaviest fish caught for the weekend. Mud eyes brought about the downfall of two Browns and three Rainbows totalling 3740 grams for Mike Doody, a Brown and a Rainbow at 1685 grams for Ken Caldecott, and an 1160 gram Brown for John Van Vliet.
Monday saw some serious work with the mudeye brigade. Boaties tried yabbies, powerbait and worms but the mudeyes won out. Martin Fellows caught four Browns with the best at 54 cms and five Rainbows and released all. Michael Doody had a haul of eight fish, released three Rainbows and weighed in two Browns and three Rainbows for 3910 grams, the heaviest being a 880 gram Rainbow. John Van Vliet released two fish and kept three Rainbows for 1920 grams, the heaviest being 800 grams. Monday night's barbecue was planned, but most members stayed inside their cabins to avoid the unpleasant wind.
The venue overall was up to a great standard, accommodation was without complaint, location right on the water for easy kayak launching, and boat facilities nearby. A great weekends entertainment.
BOAT 1 -- HASTINGS
Sunday 21st October 2018
A good number of members turned out for our first Boat trip of the season, and the weather provided a good outlook for the day.
Not so the fish.
David Rosenfield chased snapper and whiting with little success. Ken Caldecott and Russell May did the same moving several times but could only produce undersize KG whiting. Henry Tabone was in the same boat (pun intended) with several moves and no fish to find. The KG whiting gurus in Martin Fellows and John Van Vliet explored many spots on Middle Spit but again could only find the babies amongst the KG whiting.
At the weigh-in we found Gaynor Morris winning the day with eight fish, 3 snapper and 5 trevally for a total bag of 5840 grams, the heaviest fish a 1230 gram trevally and a 755 gram snapper, outshining husband Ian Morris weighing in six fish of 4 snapper and 2 trevally for a total weight of 2710 grams.
Overall members had an enjoyable days outing and enjoyed the fine weather as well.

FRESHWATER 2
SUNDAY 7th OCTOBER
SUNDAY 7th OCTOBER
A Goulburn River attack again took place, this time at Breakaway, with a good weather expected according to the reports. However members found the river flowing both higher and much faster than expected which provided some challenges for the day.
The fast flow meant it was difficult to find the fish as they avoid the fast water, but it then provided new opportunities for the fishermen to find them.
Weigh-in time found the Dalziel Foundation, being Mark, Ryan and Leigh together with Mark Constantine all presented fish to be appraised. Mark Dalziel took out the top honors with a Rainbow Trout of 1325 grams.
Other members, namely Martin Fellows and John Van Vliet both caught good sized fish but chose to release rather than weigh-in.
A difficult day with the water, but a pleasant day overall.

FRESHWATER 1
SUNDAY 23rd SEPTEMBER
SUNDAY 23rd SEPTEMBER
The Goulburn River at Thornton was the site for the day, with a weather report indicative of a cool and overcast day - ideal for our intentions.
Members were briefed early on, and then individuals chose whether to venture up or down from the bridge.
Martin Fellows produced the best fish of the day (pictured) using soft plastics on a sighting close to the bank, almost under the bank, but after a quick pic said fish was released to catch another bait.
Best of three members at weigh-in time were John Van Vliet with a 345 gram Brown, Mark Dalziel with a 240 gram Brown, but top of the day went to Ryan Dalziel with a 310 gram Rainbow and a 430 gram Brown for a best bag of 740 grams. Well done Ryan.

ESTUARY 1 SUNDAY 9th SEPTEMBER

Members ventured to Powlett River on a very cold and most blustery morning. Trip Leader Martin Fellows held a briefing beside the caravan park, and then the members headed off in their chosen directions. Some members moved upstream from the Powlett River bridge whilst some also went downstream to the mouth, covering both sides. With the incoming tide there was plenty of activity with everybody catching fish, both keepers and undersize varieties. Interesting variations with the bait was productive as were the lure casters. The trip finished early with poor weather and a change of tide discouraging both the fish and the fisherman.
John Van Vliet topped the day with heaviest bag and heaviest fish, his best fish being a Estuary Perch of 835 grams. Dennis McMahon had a bream of 740 grams and Mike Doody a bream of 585 grams. A good days outing. |

SURF 2 POWLETT RIVER
5th August 2018 Ken Champion Trophy
Brief report, and looks as though Surf 2 moved to Kilcunda
Small roll up for a good days fun. Seven fish weighed in, the best being a 1 kg Australian salmon.
Not sure who had the heaviest fish, but could it be the Leprechaun in the attached pic?

ANNUAL INTERCLUB SURF COMPETITION
|
This Annual Inter-Club Competition between Ormond, Elwood, and Oakdlae set for the 15th July went off well, although we had no representation from Elwood.
Gunnamatta gave us great weather and a wind from the Northwest which conveniently came in behind us. We kicked off about an hour after the tide had turned. Early visitors to the beach had already managed a good catch, and as we all found, the fishing slowed as the morning wore on. At weigh in time and whilst the Ormond boys got the barbecue stoked up, we realised that all participating members from both Clubs had caught fish which was going to make for an interesting average weight from each Club. Oakdale's total bag weight was 8.445 kgs for an average of 1.685 kgs, but topping the day was Ormond's total of 16.135 kgs for and average weight of 2.305 kgs, and thus the congratulations went to the Ormond lads for retaining the Challenge Shiield. Individual performances were Michael Procopio from Ormond with a 10 salmon 6.8 kgs heaviest bag for the day, and team mate Sergey Lepikhin flew the flag with a 1.845 kg heaviest fish. Our best was Ken Caldecott's heaviest bag of 2 salmon for 2.035 kgs, and Mal Hunter with the heaviest fish being a salmon of 1.450 kgs. The wind-up barbecue went very well and all the participants agreed a great day had been enjoyed. |
WARATAH BAY VISIT
A recent visit by four fishos (or should we call the the 'Awesome Foursome') to the Wrest at Waratah Bay checking out the thirty five degree weather forecast, saw three days of good fishing conditions. Light winds, slight seas, minimum weed, and overcast skies with occasional sunny breaks.
Fishing almost straight out from the house location, the members produced a total of 59 keepers for the three days. Plenty of 500 gram salmon in the spread, Janusz Zuchowski included a 50 cm flathead, Roger Clarke had many yellow-eye mullet with the largest 37 cm and 450 grams, whilst that man again Eddy Tusia dragged in a salmon of about 2.5 kg. Great place, great time, great fishing.
Certainly a good salmon again.................maybe attracted to the hat!

WOW. What a great day's outing. Sunny Sunday morning with a great forecast, slight breeze only, little or no weed, and only a slight sea condition running.
The whole beach area is fishing well at the moment, with many schools and various sizes available to anglers.
Many fish caught during the day, with 20 being presented at the weigh in.
Eddy Tusia was labelled the "Salmon Whisperer" for the day having bagged out, and presented the largest salmon of 2.36 kg.
Great day's outing.

BEMM RIVER LONG WEEKEND
Queens Birthday 9-11th June
Report is underway, with Sunday having been the standout day. We had a closed entrance, we had wind, we had bream, we had seals. More later.
SURF 4
Kilcunda Beach 3rd June 2018
Members met as planned at Cemetery Beach with the forecast offering a great day of fishing.
Little or no wind was a plus, but the intense weed was a minus to all.
A two hour window on the incoming tide saw the weed disappear and all members catching Australian salmon.
At the weigh in a total of 23 fish constituted a good effort for the day. Eddy Tusia topped the score sheet with the heaviest bag of nine fish weighing a total of 3950 grams, whilst Mark Dalziel capped his day with heaviest fish at 910 grams.

FRESHWATER 3
Thornton 22nd April 2018
This was our last Freshwater trip planned for the 2017-2018 season. Weather at Thornton was forecast as promising although initially we saw a foggy start. Foggy starts usually bring good sunshine.
The water was flowing quite fast and a high level so we decided to move downstream to Gilmores Bridge for better access to the action areas.
The Dalziel entourage ventured downstream and proved that to be the best spot for fishing.
The rest of the members moved about, had some small successes, but could not produce the keepers required.
Back to the bridge for the weigh-in saw Leigh Dalziel and his two brown trout weighing 610 grams, but father Mark topped the day with three fish weighed in at 1380 grams, and his heaviest being an 805 gram Rainbow trout.
The sunshine came good as expected, and a good day had by all.

ESTUARY 3
Powlett River 7th April 2018
This event was changed from the original Sunday at Werribee River and became a Saturday at Powlett River.
All members gathered for a briefing at 11.00 am, and then as was the case at the last Powlett outing, everyone moved upstream to Dalyston to try their luck. Water was very clear and showed copious numbers of small baitfish interspersed with the occasional larger variety. Members using bait managed to catch plenty of the smaller species which added some excitement to the day. Martin Fellows was the only soft plastic user and was rewarded with success catching one bream of keepable size, but chose to release same back to the water.
Weigh in time saw only three members offering fish to be assessed. Leigh Dalziel had two bream for a bag total of 875 grams, Mal Hunter had the same number of bream with a bag weight of 1070 grams, whilst Michael Doody capped the day with a heaviest bag weighing 1925 grams consisting of four bream and the heaviest fish of 655 grams.
In all great weather, great fishing and everybody had a great day.

Powlett River 25th March 2018
Morning briefing for members saw the weather showing a small rain band about due and another due towards midday, generally was windy but sunny, so a good day was to be forecast.
Plenty of small bream were available, also small salmon, and Martin Fellows found a 28cm bream on plastics.
The Dalziels obviously had a poor day leaving about 1.00 pm with nothing major reported. Plenty of big fish sighted in the clear water abounding the Dalyston bridge, but no interest shown by the fish.
Weigh in showed the day had been less than was forecast earlier, with Mal Hunter being the only person to weigh in fish with two bream in his bag of 1265 grams and the heaviest fish being 785 grams. Well done Mal!

BOAT 2 or 6 - RESCHEDULED EVENT
Hastings Saturday 10th MARCH 2018
Boat 2 which was originally scheduled for 19th November last, faced bad weather, and finally got underway as Boat 6 with a pleasant Saturday outing and a 7.00 am start.
The day opened with great weather and a good roll up of boats and members facing the run out tide.
As is usual with Westernport, all members had to make constant moves in an endeavour to find some success.
Western and eastern sides of middle spit, the Tankerton Jetty area, and the Cerberus Channel were all tried with some success. Movement had to be continual and frustration was the order of the day.
The 2.30 pm weigh -in saw John Van Vliet with 6 King George whiting totalling 1810 grams, Michael Doody with 6 of the same at 1805 grams, but it was Ken Caldecott who took out the top achiever spot with 6 whiting and one silver trevalley totalling 2165 grams, and the trevalley made heaviest fish of the day at 795 grams.
A good time was had by all.
The day opened with great weather and a good roll up of boats and members facing the run out tide.

BOAT 5 - Corinella /Coronet Bay 3rd March 2018
This event was originally scheduled for 25th February, but the inclement weather for that weekend resulted in a re-appointment to (for a change) SATURDAY 3rd March.
Captain David Rosenfield briefed a small contingent just before 8.00am and highlighted a forecast of weather change including severe winds late in the afternoon. Weather to start looked for a good day.
The kayak brigade moved off to Coronet Bay to pump bass yabbies and then out to enjoy several moves before success came with the sought after King George whiting, and also mullet, snapper, and leatherjackets.
The boat contingent wandered to other points of the bay with little success and finally Ken Caldecott joined the kayakers, but could not find any fish.
Back at Corinella for the weigh-in saw John Van Vliet with eight KG whiting and one mullet totalling 2985 grams, the mullet at 890 grams being the day's heaviest fish. Michael Doody also weighed in five KG whiting for a total of 1655 grams.
In all, a good day out for a small crowd.
John likes to show us how to present his catch for the table in the photo below.

BOAT 4 - Hastings 11th February 2018
This being a featured Whiting Preference outing, it was good to see the weather report good, the members keen, but maybe the fish knew about the day!
Of the four boats, two headed off in the direction of French Island Channel, and the other two went north towards Yaringa.
The several moves, a great influx of toadies and the absence of whiting soon had the first two heading back to Middle Spit to try with the outgoing tide. Some result, more moves, and then relocation to north of the spit. The turn of the tide produced both a supply of whiting and a spring in the wind speed.
Back at the ramp for weigh-in saw Martin Fellows with a bag of 15, only weighing in allowable 10 fish at 3980 grams, but it included a 660 gram Master Award KG Whiting. John Van Vliet produced 6 fish totalling 2335 grams and Ken Caldecott had 2 fish for 650 grams.
In all, a good days outing, took quite a few moves, but produced the results required.

Boat Trip # 3 - Hastings 4th February 2018
Usual 7.00 am kick-off saw 8 members attending and enjoying what looked to be a great day on the water. Forecast temperature was towards the high 20s and the wind was not expected to be a problem.
Morning started with light north-easterley winds during the ebb tide, and as the day progressed changed to south-easterly with the incoming tide.
Members found the day not to be a good and productive with the fish, and it provided for hard work with constant shifting in order to find anything worthwhile.
A total of twelve King George Whiting were presented at weigh-in with Martin Fellows topping the list with six fish, heaviest fish of 475 grams and heaviest bag at 1830 grams. John Van Vliet produced three fish for 795 grams and Geoff Long had three also totalling 775 grams. The other five members were obviously saving their best efforts for next time, not managing to have any catch to weigh in.
A great days fun was enjoyed by all, particularly the Treasurer with his event winning grin.
